CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Perform manual, skilled, and unskilled labor in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of grounds and facilities
at and around City parks/facilities and on or adjacent to public rights-of-way. Performs general construction,
maintenance, and repairs to a wide array of City buildings and infrastructure. The position requires applicants
to be 16 years of age or older.
The job requires working knowledge of construction and landscape techniques and general cleaning and
janitorial methods. The job requires the ability to utilize hand and power tools in a safe manner. The job
requires the ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed
officials, other City employees, other organizations, and the general public. Individuals must be capable of
operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, in wet and humid conditions,
with areas of dust, odors, mist, gases or other airborne matter. Employees work in/at places where they are
exposed to mechanical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. The position
works days, evenings, and weekends as required.

experience with the City of Pocatello.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (illustrative only and may vary by assignment)
Park & Beautification Area Caretaker (P01): Performs general maintenance and basic horticultural work for
parks & beautification areas, including: clean-up and disposal of trash & debris, planting of flowers, minor
pruning of shrubs & trees, weed eating/pulling & minor spraying, watering, janitorial, etc. May be responsible
for driving a City vehicle to various park & beautification area sites throughout the City, as assigned.
Pool Cleaner (P01): Performs general pool cleaning duties at the Ross Park Aquatics Complex as assigned
including vacuuming pools, scrubbing pool tiles, hosing off decks, cleaning slide tower, checking skimmers,
patching and inflating tubes, picking up trash, and performing other light maintenance duties.
Hand Mower Operator (P02): Performs hand mowing, weed eating, and general clean-up of park &
beautification turf areas on a daily basis, including: safe handling & operation of various turf and landscaping
equipment including hand mowers, sod cutters, weed eaters, dump bed trucks, and other similar small
equipment. Minor maintenance of mowing equipment, including: maintaining proper oil levels up and keeping
blades sharpened. Daily reporting of assigned job completion status to supervisor. Responsible for driving
a City vehicle to various park & beautification area sites throughout the City, as assigned.
Construction Laborer I (P02): Performs minor landscaping and construction duties using small hand
tools. Limited small equipment operation on landscape and other construction projects, typically under direct
supervision. Clean-up of brush and tree limbs by feeding them into chipper, limited minor pruning. New, first
season employee with limited/minimal experience.

Restroom Staff (P02): Performs general park & maintenance facility restroom cleaning, including: opening
and lock-up of facilities, dumping of trash cans, cleaning of toilets, urinals, mirrors and floors. Provides
assistance as needed to other work crews, such as hand mowing. Reports assigned job completion status
to supervisor on a daily basis. Responsible for driving a City vehicle to various restroom sites throughout the
City, as assigned.
Groundskeeper (P02): Performs maintenance, up-keep and game field preparations for various City
baseball/softball, soccer and football fields. May be responsible for driving a City vehicle to various
ballfield/sports field facilities throughout the City, as assigned. Operates a variety of mowers to maintain
athletic fields and lawns; inspects tractor and mower for safe and proper operation; maintains equipment as
needed, replaces fuel, fluids, and oil. Mows, edges, trims and rakes fields; operates riding mowers, push
mowers, light duty vehicles, blowers, sweepers, trimmers, edger, and weed eaters. Rakes, sweeps, blows
and picks up clippings, paper, and trash from athletic fields. Performs daily Baseball/Softball Field
maintenance, including filling infield holes, adding clay to infield when necessary, and inspecting the ball fields
for proper safety. Prepare ballfields for game activities, including dragging the infield, chalking the field
according to specified dimensions, watering infield, and setting bases. Job requires ability to understand and
execute oral & written directions in performance of grounds maintenance activities. Perform other duties as
directed by Lead Groundskeeper or Team Sports Program Manager and/or Specialist.
Greenway Trails Maintenance Worker (P03): Performs a variety of general maintenance and horticulture
work for Greenway Trail areas. The job includes mowing, weeding and spraying, tree trimming, general cleanup and disposal of landscape debris and trash. Performs minor maintenance of mowing equipment, including
maintaining proper oil levels up and keeping blades sharpened. Performs a variety of general maintenance
and horticulture work for Greenway Trail areas. The job includes mowing, weeding and spraying, tree
trimming, general clean-up and disposal of landscape debris and trash. Operates hand and power tools.
Maintains, services and repairs equipment and tools. Operates a City vehicle to various Greenway Trails
throughout the City as assigned.
Trim Mower Operator (P03): Operates small motorized turf area and landscaping equipment involved in
the maintenance of park & beautification turf areas on a daily basis, including but not limited to: small riding
mowers, backhoes, tractors, trenchers, skid loaders, bucket trucks, etc. Performs basic irrigation system
repairs, including: digging up & replacing sprinkler heads & valves, and troubleshooting irrigation time
clocks. Inspects sprinkler heads for proper operation, and makes adjustments as needed. Assists with
installation of new irrigation systems and retrofitting old systems. Assists in forestry operation duties as
needed, including: trimming, tree & brush clean-up with chipper, and assisting with stump removal. Mixes
and applies weed control chemicals as needed and assigned, including: controlling weeds around trees, fence
lines, gravel parking lots and sidewalks. Daily reporting of assigned job completion status to
supervisor. Responsible for driving a City vehicles and trailers, as well as loading & transport of large area
City maintenance equipment to various park & beautification area and construction sites throughout the City,
as assigned.
Construction Laborer II (P03): Employee possesses experience in and basic knowledge of construction
skills necessary to provide assistance in construction of park amenities and other assigned construction
duties on an as needed basis, including: pouring & finishing cement, use of small hand & power tools and
equipment including chain saws, basic carpentry, etc. Operates a mini-excavator and skid steer, including
loading onto and unloading from a trailer.
Lead Groundskeeper (P03): Provides maintenance, up-keep and game field preparations for various City
baseball/softball fields. Serves as team leader, directing and overseeing the daily/weekly operations of the
Team Sports Groundskeeper crews as directed by, and under the supervision of the Team Sports Program
Manager. Operates a variety of mowers to maintain athletic fields and lawns; inspects tractor and mower to

ensure safe and proper operation; maintains equipment as needed, replacing fuel, fluids, and oil. Performs
mowing, edging, trimming and raking of fields; operates riding mowers, push mowers, light duty vehicles,
blowers, sweepers, trimmers, edger, and weed eaters. Rakes, sweeps, blows and picks up clippings,
paper, and trash from athletic fields. Supervises weekly schedule of trash pickup from all athletic fields and
complexes. Performs daily Baseball/Softball Field maintenance, including filling infield holes, adding clay to
infield when necessary, and inspecting the ball fields for proper safety. Prepares ballfields for game
activities, including dragging the infield, chalking the field according to specified dimensions, watering
infield, and setting bases. Employee must have the ability to understand and execute oral & written
directions, as well as utilize independent judgment in performance of grounds maintenance
activities. Responsible for driving a City vehicle to various ballfield facilities throughout the City, as
assigned. Performs other duties as directed by Team Sports Program Manager and/or Specialist.
Code Enforcement Assistant (P04): The Code Enforcement Assistant assists the Parks Supervisor/City
Arborist in the administration of the City's Tree Ordinance Code Enforcement duties. The job includes
contacting citizens and companies regarding compliance with the Tree Ordinance, performing minor tree
and branch trimming and/or pruning, tracking violations, and preparing and distributing correspondence.
Makes in-person contact with residents and businesses to inform of Tree Ordinance code violations.
Conveys timeline for compliance with Tree Ordinance. Assesses the ability of residents and businesses to
remedy code violations. If permitted, performs minor tree and branch trimming and/or pruning on behalf of
residents and businesses to remedy violations. Safely operates various tree trimming tools and small
equipment, including a chain saw. Assists Parks Supervisor/City Arborist in the tracking of Tree Ordinance
code violations as needed. Assists in the preparation and distribution of Tree Ordinance code violation
correspondence. Operates a City vehicle throughout the City as assigned.
Gang Mower Operator (P04): Operates large motorized turf area and large landscaping equipment
involved in the maintenance of park & beautification turf areas on a daily basis, including but not limited to:
large riding/gang mowers, chippers, stump grinders, dump trucks, backhoes, tractors, trenchers, skid
loaders, bucket trucks, etc. Performs general maintenance of large area/gang mowers, including: greasing,
power washing, checking & maintaining fluid levels at proper operating ranges, and keeping air filters & prescreens clean. Assists in forestry operation duties as needed, including: tree removal, grinding stumps,
chipping limbs, light trimming, planting, mulching and watering of trees. Performs expanded levels of mixing
and application of weed control chemicals as needed and assigned, including: weeds around trees, fence
lines, gravel parking lots and sidewalks. Reports to supervisor daily regarding completion status of
assigned job duties. Duties performed with little to no supervision. Responsible for driving a City vehicles
and trailers, as well as loading & transport of large area City maintenance equipment to various park &
beautification area and construction sites throughout the City, as assigned.
Construction Laborer III (P04): Employee must possess above average knowledge, skill & experience in
construction and construction related tasks necessary to provide assistance in construction of park
amenities and other assigned construction duties on an as needed basis, and with little or no supervision,
including: large equipment operation such as backhoe, front end loader and non-CDL dump
trucks. Performs pouring & finishing of cement. Uses small hand & power tools and equipment including
chain saws, carpentry, etc. in completion of duties. Daily reporting of assigned job completion status to
supervisor. Duties performed with little to no supervision. Responsible for driving a City vehicles and
trailers, as well as loading & transport of large area City maintenance equipment to various park &
beautification areas and construction sites throughout the City, as assigned.
Irrigation Systems Specialist/Parks System Plumber Assistant (P05): Responsible for the overall
maintenance of the irrigation systems in Lower & Upper Ross Park, as well as other areas in the parks
system as needed/assigned, to include: Pocatello Creek Interchange, Center Street Interchange, South 5th
Interchange and Constitution Park. Employee must possess expert skill, knowledge & competency;
demonstrated levels of expert proficiency in individual performance and team leadership to accomplish the

completion of identifiable high responsibility level Ross Park irrigation system maintenance. Provides
assistance to the full-time plumbers in other areas of the parks system. Position requires highest level of
certifications to allow for completion & supervision of assigned duties. Employee is assigned authority to
purchase and reconcile irrigation system supplies, as needed and/or directed. Duties performed with no
supervision.
Maintenance Worker (P05): Provides daily pool/hot tub maintenance including: balancing water chemistry,
pool/hot tub cleanliness, and ensuring State Health Department Regulations are met. Certified Pool
Operator (CPO) Certification is required. Position also provides general building, equipment & grounds
maintenance, and basic custodial duties, as needed and directed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit,
stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces. The job requires hand/finger
dexterity to handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation
of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100
pounds with assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and
interact with the public is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with
