Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE:
The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for Streets Division seasonal laborer positions. These positions perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties related to the construction, maintenance, or repair of City-owned property in the Public Works Streets Division. Applicants must be 18 years or older to apply.
This announcement will be used to fill seasonal positions as they become available. These positions work up to 40 hours per week which can include 10-hour shifts, evening and night hours, and shifts on Saturdays and Sundays.
Hourly wage dependent upon qualifications:
$14.00 Hourly (minimum of 18 years of age if operating City vehicles and working in the right-of-way, Idaho driver's license);
- $16.00 Hourly, (minimum 18 years of age, Class A or B Idaho commercial driver's license if required to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
May perform all or some of the following:
Uses a variety of hand tools, such as shovels, picks, brooms, pitch forks, etc., loads or unloads supplies; lifts and moves heavy objects; lifts and carries materials in the maintenance of property owned by the City.
Operates small power tools and equipment such as, hand mower, weed trimmer, chain saw, riding mower, tamper, or roller; may operate pick-up or small vehicle in transportation of materials; checks equipment on a daily basis to assure that it is operating safely and correctly.
May operate Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) (with Class A or B Idaho commercial driver's license).
Sweeps alleys and sidewalks, hand shovels snow, hand salts and sands, cleans up debris and construction waste; assists in the preparation of grounds for various projects; sets up and removes barricades as needed; may assist in loading of snow in winter; may assist in filling and placing sand bags during flood control.
Lifts and carries gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber, or other materials in the maintenance of streets, structures, or property owned by the City; assists in the preparation of ground for application of plant mix, concrete, or pre-mix materials to streets or roadways and assists in raking, smoothing, and tamping repaired patches.
May operate sanding truck in winter and occasionally operates dump truck and snowplow.
Performs a variety of duties related to the installation, maintenance, repair, or replacement of City signs and painted traffic control devices.
Provides for the installation, maintenance, repair, or replacement of City signs, reflectors, and pavement markings.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and Experience:
A. Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an ability or aptitude to perform above duties.
AND
B. Some experience in the operation of heavy-duty trucks desirable (if required).
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some knowledge of City geography; some knowledge of basic maintenance procedures; some knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to above duties; some knowledge of the operation of standard hand and power tools.
Some skill in the operation of standard hand tools and heavy-duty trucks preferred.
Ability to work in all weather extremes; ability to perform strenuous physical labor; ability to operate small motorized vehicles and pick-up; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to develop effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
3. Special Qualifications:
May require a valid Idaho Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement.
May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and/or be on-call.
Final candidates will be subject to a background check prior to employment.
Final candidates will also be subject to a pre-employment drug screening and a drug and alcohol clearinghouse check prior to operating a Commerical Motor Vehicle.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Working within public rights-of-way near construction equipment and vehicular traffic; working within trenches and excavations. Talking, hearing and seeing essential to the performance of the job. Daily exposure to weather extremes and seasonal conditions. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, discriminating thinking. Frequent local travel may be required in normal course of job performance.
