ENTRY LEVEL FIREFIGHTER – OPEN/CONTINUOUS

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligibility list for the position of

Entry Level Firefighter with the Caldwell Fire Department.

 48/96 Shift Schedule. Represented by IAFF Local 1821

Based on application materials, candidates may be invited to an assessment examination, which may include a written exam, oral interview, and physical abilities assessment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements below represent the required knowledge, skill, and/or ability.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

In accordance with the position classification, individuals will carry out all duties of a Firefighter and participate in all aspects of fire company operations as directed. These duties include, but are not limited to: structure fire suppression, rescue operations, emergency medical care, vehicle extrication, fire prevention, equipment maintenance, and wildland fire suppression.

The role of a firefighter is both physically and mentally demanding, requiring individuals to maintain excellent physical and mental condition throughout their career. Additionally, firefighters must demonstrate a commitment to collaborating effectively with a diverse group of colleagues and community members.

Firefighters are required to lift and move over 100lbs in challenging positions and environments while often wearing restrictive protective clothing. A physical fitness regime which balances strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance is essential for injury prevention and continued success. Firefighters can expect to perform physically and technically challenging tasks in a variety of circumstances which can present significant hazards to themselves and the public. Hazards may include but are not limited to fire suppression, extreme heat, and cold stress, working around

vehicular traffic, swift water, and ice rescue, structural collapse, trench rescue, confined space rescue, providing care to violent or contagious patients, hazardous materials exposure, emergency driving, and disaster response.

Members of the Caldwell Fire Department are expected to train throughout their career on a wide variety of constantly evolving topics to enhance their abilities and mitigate risk. Personnel are expected to operate within a rank structure and will be subject to policies, standard operating procedures, standard written orders, applicable laws, contracts, rules and regulations, supervisor expectations, and industry and department best practices.

Work schedules will require working nights, weekends, and holidays. Daily schedule disruptions are ordinary, and personnel should react with a positive attitude. Personnel will be subject to regular sleep deprivation and irregular mealtimes. Personnel may be required to work overtime during staffing shortages.

You will work closely as a team and should be willing to commit to long-term working relationships with co-workers of various personalities, backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions. Employees should demonstrate a desire to serve their fellow firefighters and the community. Personnel may be required to perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment: Office setting with travel to emergency rescue and/or firefighting incidents; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and extreme heat; work at heights on ladders; work with water.

Mobility: Incumbent may be required to maintain physical condition necessary for standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; heavy or moderate lifting; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; climbing with both legs and arms; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.

Vision: Vision sufficient to distinguish objects in limited visibility; to read small print, computer screens and printed documents.
