The Aberdeen-Springfield Canal Company (ASCC) is seeking capable, self-motivated individuals to fill Information Technology Specialist (Desktop and Network Support) positions on a full-time pr part-time basis.
Under direct supervision of the Aberdeen-Springfield Canal Company (ASCC) General Manager, the Information Technology Specialist (IT Specialist) is responsible for providing technical support and maintenance for desktop systems, network infrastructure, and related IT services. This role ensures the smooth operation of hardware, software, and network systems, delivering high-quality support to end-users and maintaining organizational IT security and performance standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Installs, configures, and troubleshoots desktop hardware, operating systems (Windows) and software applications.
- Provides all levels of support for end-user issues, including password resets, software installations, and peripheral connectivity.
- Performs routine maintenance, updates, and backups on desktop systems to ensure optimal performance.
- Assists with onboarding new employees by setting up workstations, accounts, and access permissions.
- Installs and maintains canal system known as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).
- Troubleshoots Microsoft Office software along with the Windows-configured workstations.
- Monitors and maintains network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
- Troubleshoots network connectivity issues and ensure reliable performance for LAN and VPN systems.
- Assists in configuring and managing network security protocols, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and access controls.
- Supports VoIP systems and other communication technologies.
- Manages user accounts, permissions, and group policies in Active Directory or similar systems.
- Performs system updates, patch management, and antivirus scans to maintain security compliance.
- Perform server and security audits, and system backups and recovery.
- Documents IT procedures, system configurations, and help calls in a knowledge base.
- Maintains an inventory of IT equipment, including desktops, laptops, printers, and networking devices.
- Coordinates repairs or replacements for faulty hardware and manage vendor relationships for warranty claims.
- Plans and executes hardware refresh cycles in alignment with ASCC needs.
- Provides training and guidance to end-users on software applications, IT policies, and best practices.
- Creates user guides or FAQs to enhance self-service capabilities for common IT issues.
- Works with the General Manager to implement new technologies, upgrades, or system migrations.
- Participates in IT projects, such as network expansions, cloud integrations, antenna installations, and/or cybersecurity enhancements.
- Stays updated on emerging technologies and recommends improvements to IT systems.

- Performs other duties as assigned and deemed necessary by the General Manager.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for the position, but it is not a comprehensive list.
Experience and Education
- At least two (2) years of experience in IT support, desktop administration, or network troubleshooting.
- Hands-on experience with Windows environment, Active Directory, and network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Preferred
- Certifications – CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+, and VMWare.
- Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate or equivalent. Cisco CCNA or similar networking certifications.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or electrical engineering or four (4) years directly related work experience.
- Experience within the last five (5) years in Network Engineering.
- Experience within the last five (5) years in SCADA.
- Electronics experience.
- Client PC connectivity, Ethernet, TCP/IP, and VPN
- File server knowledge.
- Knowledge of basic electricity as it relates to telecommunications networking.
