Job Description

Position Summary
The primary function of an employee in this position is to operate a sanitation collection truck and perform general maintenance work on City streets and rights-of-ways. This is an entry level position; an employee in this class may be assigned to other maintenance duties in the City’s Public Works Department. The principal duties of this position are performed in an outdoor environment that may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools, heavy equipment and exposure to hazardous and allergenic materials. Due to the on call nature of this position, the working hours vary and may include weekends, evenings and holidays.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Operates a sanitation collection truck on an assigned route;
• Ensures all containers on assigned route are emptied and contents transported and disposed of at an appropriate transfer station or disposal site;
• Performs assembly, delivery, pickup, and repair work on collection containers;
• Performs routine and minor maintenance on sanitation trucks and other equipment;
• Operates snow plowing and sanding trucks and equipment;
• Performs scheduled and assigned maintenance, repair, and service work on City streets, rights-of-ways, sidewalks, curbs, alleys, medians, and retention basins, as assigned;
• Maintains road rights-of-ways, seasonally operating dump trucks or other light trucks, front-end loaders, pavers, pavement rollers, sweepers, snow plowing and sanding trucks, and other required equipment, as assigned;
• Maintains compliance with Federal, State, County, City and other applicable public health environmental and safety standards;
• Assists in equipment maintenance; and performs other related duties as required;
Specialized Knowledge
• Idaho driver’s license with Class B CDL
• Equipment and tool operation and maintenance practices;
• Methods, techniques, and equipment for collection and emptying of garbage and trash containers;
• Operate power equipment, including but not limited to, collection trucks, grounds keeping equipment, dump trucks, bobcats, loaders, pavers, rollers, snow plowing and sanding, and related equipment as assigned;
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED equivalency is required; and two (2) years of experience in equipment operation or general labor tasks is preferred OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work;
• Accurately follow written and oral instructions;
• Operate hand tools and heavy equipment;
• Operate standard office equipment, including a computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
• Communicate clearly and effectively with supervisors, the public, and other employees.
Essential Physical Abilities
• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and alarm and warning systems, including backup alarms, and communicate effectively with other employees and the public;
• Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and work orders;
• Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate motor vehicles, including heavy equipment, and operate a variety of power and hand tools and to make adjustments to equipment;
• Sufficient strength to lift and carry objects up to 80 pounds;
• Sufficient personal mobility, stamina, flexibility, and balance to perform maintenance and repair operations that require bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, and other physical exertions in an outdoor environment, including extremes of heat and cold.
