Wildlife Technician

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Wildlife Technician. This position will be located at our Southeast Regional office located in (Pocatello, Idaho). This is a 5-month non-benefited temporary position and is expected to work up to 40 hours per week. Housing is NOT provided.
Dates Needed:
This position is expected to occur from January 5th, 2026 through May 29th, 2026 (there is some flexibility in the starting and ending dates)

Supplemental Information:
Positions in this classification are used for habitat management areas, data management, wildlife management, or wildlife research. Some positions may travel to remote locations for data collection and maintenance activities and may require the physical ability to walk and backpack for several hours; operate four-wheel drive and/or off-road vehicles; lift and carry up to 65 pounds; and work in extreme weather conditions. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required. Frequent (overnight) in-state travel may be required.
Responsibilities:
- Monitoring of GPS collared ungulates including prompt mortality investigations and associated necropsies on deceased animals
- Collection of chronic wasting disease (CWD) samples
- Assisting with wildlife capture for research (e.g. mule deer, grouse) and nuisance conflict (e.g. turkey, moose) management
- Survey and monitoring of sage and sharp-tailed grouse leks (March & April)
- Assisting with depredation conflicts
- Assisting with implementation of the Department’s Pelican Management Plan
- Data collection & database management.
- Successful applicant will also assist with other wildlife, fisheries, and habitat related projects as needed. Examples include surveys for species of greatest conservation need (SGCN) such as pygmy rabbits, assisting with fish electroshocking projects, and/or working on riparian restoration efforts.
Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required)
- Some knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements; and wildlife habitat
- evaluation and management practices.
- Experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing biological data.
- Valid driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications Specialty: (These qualifications are required.)
- Experience operating and performing minor maintenance and upkeep on equipment to include four-wheel drive trucks, off-road vehicles, and/or motorized boats and using small hand and power tools.
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will be self-motivated, able to carry out daily duties with little supervision, and have a strong work ethic. Ability to perform field work in variable weather conditions and rough terrain is necessary. A good knowledge of wildlife management principles and practices; some college level classes in wildlife management is preferred. Proficient in the use of Microsoft applications and experience using topographical maps/software and GPS is a plus. The technician must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
