Job Description
Dates of Need: 2/23/2026-10/31/2026. This application is for general farm labor, irrigation duties and harvest duties on a farm that grows onions, alfalfa, vegetables, and row crops.
This is a Skill Level I position requiring 0-3 months experience in general farm labor, irrigating, and ag equipment operation. The lifting requirement for this position is 60 pounds.
Irrigation duties:
Hand lines:
1.Connect pipes
2.Check the alignment of pipe and adjust for proper water distribution
3.Attach lines to water supply
4.Turn on pump
5.Turn valves to start flow of water
6.Disassemble lines and carry pipes across fields at specified intervals,
7.Move pipes through freshly irrigated crop and/or plowed fields where mud may be deep at times
8.Lift and carry pipe sections weighing approximately 60 pounds on a sustained basis
Flood Irrigation:
1.Lift gate inside of flooded irrigation ditch/pipe permitting water to flow into bordered section of field
2.Shovel and pack dirt in low spots of embankment of cut trenches in high areas to direct water flow
3.Close gates in ditch/pipe when bordered section is flooded
4.Open gate or connect pipe to underground pipe system that releases water flow into reservoir or ditch
5.Siphon water from flooded reservoir or ditch to channel water into designated areas
6.Shovel or hoe soil to clear ditches/furrows and build embankments to appropriately channel water
7.Mix and apply proper solutions to fill holes/cracks in pipes, ditches, and spillways, and make minor repairs to metal, concrete, and wooden frameworks in pipe and ditch valves and gates.
Other Duties May Include:
1.Operate or maintain equipment used in agricultural production, harvest, and field preparation such as tractors, irrigation equipment, 4-wheelers, non-CDL, farm exempt trucks and trailers, and other commonly used
equipment in agriculture.
2.Operate tractors to mow, weed spray and trailers in the fields.
3.Load and mix chemicals in addition to operating tractors sprayers.
4.Spray fertilizer or pesticide solutions to control insects, fungus and weed growth, and diseases, using hand sprayers.
5.Assist in planting, weeding, and harvesting crops.
6.Workers may also clear debris and garbage from fields and clean/maintain farm buildings, onion packing facility, structures, equipment, and work areas.
7.Assist with farm building/field maintenance and repairs.
8.Clean and repair irrigation ditches.
9.Assist in placing and moving bee boards.
10.Pest management in fields and farm areas.
Those who possess a valid driver’s license may transport equipment, supplies, crop and workers.
All other duties assigned.
Pivot Irrigation
1.Push on switch that activates circle sprinkler system
2.Turn on/off pivots
3.Learn and master operating a pivot
4.If a pivot is stuck, get it unstuck and in operating condition
5.Roll up/unroll pivot hoses
6.Unplug plugged up nozzles
7.Unplug plugged up hoses
8.Replace broken nozzles and hoses
9.Maintain operation of a pivot at optimum level
Drip Irrigation:
Workers will lay drip tape and remove drip tape in fields during the growing season. They will inspect, monitor, and repair drip system daily.
Other Irrigation Duties:
1.Remove pipes/wheel lines from storage and lay out/place in predetermined patterns in fields
2.Lubricate, adjust, repair and replace parts such as sprinkler heads and drive chains using hand tools
3.Observe Revolving sprinklers and adjust to ensure proper operation and uniform distribution of water
4.Disassemble, service, and store pipe/mainlines/wheel lines after irrigation season.
5.To meet minimum acceptable performance standards when irrigating, the worker must, after a 10-day conditioning period, move an average of at least 48 40-foot sections of 3-inch pipe or 44 40-foot sections of4-inch pipe per hour under normal working conditions.
Planting
1. Field maintenance and weeding using hands, machinery, and sprayers
2. Loading seed into planters
3. Walking behind planters to insure proper procedure
Onion Harvest
1.Culling onions
2.Riding on harvester
3.Binning onions during the harvest/unloading process
4.Maintenance of bins and transport of bins to appropriate storage facilities.
Workers must possess requisite physical strength and endurance to repeat the harvest process throughout the workday. Workers must work at a sustained, vigorous pace and make
bona-fide efforts to work efficiently and consistently that are reasonable under the climatic and all other working conditions.
Workers may never ride on agricultural equipment not designed for work related riding purposes or any other non-passenger intended equipment unless instructed and authorized by
the employer or supervisor to do so.
Workers with valid driver’s licenses and that are insurable may transport workers, equipment, supplies or crop.
All work-related injuries must be immediately reported to the crew leader, foreman, or supervisor.
If light duty work is assigned for a worker’s compensation injury, the worker will be expected to return to work and perform the light duty work upon advice from a physician and the
workers compensation insurance company.
Employer-paid drug test may be required if a worker has an accident at work.
Full Growing Season Commitment: The job offered requires that the worker be available for work every day that work is available for the full period of employment. The worker agrees
to be available for work and perform the assigned work for the assigned employer whenever work is available through the full period of employment.
Training: There will be a demonstration period to familiarize workers with job specification and to demonstrate proper harvest methods and other crop specific issues such as particular
grading, sizing or equipment operation.
The anticipated hours listed represent the normal work schedule. Due to the nature of these crops, weather, and the requirement to send crops to customers when needed, it is the
prevailing practice to work more or different hours than those listed. A worker may be offered more than the specified hours of work, maybe offered work on federal holidays or the worker’s Sabbath as nursery/farm labor may need to take place seven days a week; however, the worker will not be required to work for more than the number of hours specified in the job order, or on the worker’s Sabbath or Federal holidays. Saturday work will be required.
Workday start times vary depending on the weather. depending on the time of year, hours of daylight, and production requirements. There may be periods when little or no work will be
available due to weather, time of year, and the requirements of the cropping or growing season. Workers must be able to work varying shifts as required by the season and work
performed. Workers are notified of any change in the start times. Work may be performed during rain, light snow, cold, freezing temperatures and/or in high humidity and in
temperatures over a 100 degrees F. Worker may be required to work in fields when crops are wet with dew/rain and should have suitable clothing for variable weather conditions.
Workers’ job duties may require split shifts (e.g. 5:00 am to 10:00am and 5:00pm to 8:00pm). Work hours may vary were there are periods when extra hours are offered and periods of
reduced hours are available due to weather, crop conditions, and time of year.
