Utility Service Operator

Job Description

As the Utility Service Operator, you will:
• Read residential and commercial water meters using handheld or automated meter-reading equipment
• Inspect, maintain, repair, and replace water meters, gaskets, frost plates, lids, tiles, and related equipment
• Troubleshoot meter issues, leaks, pressure concerns, irrigation complaints, and service interruptions
• Turn water service on or off as needed for customer requests or maintenance needs
• Re-read meters when necessary to verify billing accuracy
• Identify and report leaks, damaged lids, obstructions, safety hazards, or malfunctioning meters
• Use hand pumps, electric pumps, metal detectors, shovels, and other tools to access and service meters
• Complete service requests through Cityworks and document work completed
• Maintain accurate usage records, reports, and inventory usage
• Explain utility issues and service findings to customers in a courteous and professional manner
• Coordinate with supervisors and other City departments to maximize efficiency
• Perform related duties as required

• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot utility equipment issues
• Experience using hand tools, pumps, shovels, meters, and field equipment
• Ability to diagnose leaks, service concerns, and meter malfunctions
• Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate clearly with the public
• Self-motivated individual who can work independently and manage routes efficiently
• Ability to read maps, locate meters, and navigate throughout the city
• Basic computer skills and comfort using handheld devices or software systems
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate work
• Ability to work safely outdoors in changing weather and field conditions
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma or GED
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the work
• Class I Idaho Water Distribution License, or ability to obtain within one (1) year
• Valid Idaho Driver’s License
• Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
