Job Description
Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Manager of Experiment Engineering to lead the department responsible for the safe execution of Experiments and design authority over experiment related systems at the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). Reporting to the Director of ATR Experiments and Safety Analysis Engineering, this position provides leadership for a multi-disciplinary engineering organization focused on experiment development, deployment, and operational support. The Senior Manager ensures safe, compliant, and efficient execution of experiment engineering activities, develops organizational capability, and drives continuous improvement while supporting critical DOE research and national laboratory objectives.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Provide leadership and direction for the Experiment Engineering department supporting ATR irradiation testing and experimental programs.
Design authority over complex experiment related systems, such as experiment loops and associated support systems.
Ensure nuclear safety of every experiment by showing compliance to the ATR SAR
Lead and develop two lead professionals, and staff, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
Ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, quality assurance requirements, and laboratory policies governing experiment engineering activities.
Establish priorities, allocate resources, and manage departmental workloads to support the achievement of target irradiation days, experiment schedules, and customer commitments.
Collaborate with reactor operations, nuclear safety, project management, research organizations, and facility support organizations to ensure successful experiment execution and experiment support system health.
Drive improvements in engineering processes, configuration management, experiment development methodologies, and organizational effectiveness.
Support risk identification and mitigation activities associated with experiment design, deployment, and operation.
Develop and execute departmental strategic plans aligned with directorate objectives and Idaho National Laboratory mission priorities.
Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including DOE sponsors, researchers, and project partners.
Champion innovation and technical excellence in experiment engineering, testing methodologies, and engineering practices.
Required:
Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field and a minimum of 9 years of relevant engineering experience, including at least 3 years of leadership or management experience.
Demonstrated experience in nuclear facility engineering, reactor support engineering, or related technical disciplines.
Experience leading engineering teams in a complex technical or regulated environment.
Knowledge of engineering processes, quality assurance requirements, and configuration management principles.
Experience managing technical programs, resources, budgets, and organizational priorities.
Demonstrated ability to align technical execution with strategic and operational objectives.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.
The ideal candidate will possess:
Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in engineering or a related technical discipline.
Experience supporting irradiation testing, experimental programs, nuclear research facilities, or DOE missions.
Experience working within a DOE, national laboratory, or highly regulated technical environment.
Demonstrated success developing high-performing technical organizations and future leaders.
Strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills across engineering, operations, research, and project organizations.
Experience leading organizational improvement initiatives and driving operational excellence.
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences and leadership levels.
Physical Requirements:
Work will primarily be performed in an office environment with periodic visits to laboratory, industrial, and nuclear facility environments.
Ability to travel as required to support programmatic and organizational objectives.
Must be able to meet facility access requirements and perform work in accordance with applicable safety and radiological controls.
