Job Description

Job Summary: The Director of Finance is responsible for the strategic leadership, direction, and management of the financial operations of Syringa Hospital & Clinics. As a member of the Leadership Team, this position ensures the financial integrity and long-term sustainability of the organization through sound financial planning, budgeting, accounting, reimbursement management, compliance, and reporting. The Director of Finance collaborates with hospital leadership, department directors, medical staff, and the Board of trustees to support the organization's mission of providing exceptional healthcare to the communities it serves.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Participate in strategic planning and organizational decision-making.
  • Provide financial guidance to the CEO, leadership team and Board of Trustees.
  • Develop long-range financial strategies that support organizational goals.
  • Present financial reports and recommendations to the Board and Finance Committee.
  • Direct all accounting functions including General Ledger, Accounts payable, Payroll, Fixed Asset, Cash Management, and Financial Reporting.
  • Provides direct oversight for Grants, Patient Access (hospital, clinic, therapy), Financial Counselors, Health Information Management.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly financial statements. 
  • Oversee annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor organizational financial performance and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop financial forecasts and long-range projections.
  • Manage organizational investments and cash flow
  • Coordinate the annual budget process with department leaders.
  • Monitory departmental performance against budget
  • Provide financial analyses to support operational decisions.
  • Evaluate capital equipment requests and return-on-investment analyses.
  • Oversee reimbursement strategies for:
    • Medicare
    • Medicaid
    • Commercial insurance
    • Cost-based reimbursement
  • Ensure timely completion of Medicare and Medicaid Cost Reports.
  • Collaborate with Revenue Cycle Director to improve collections and reduce denied claims.
  • Monitor payer mix and reimbursement trends
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
    • Medicare Conditions of Participation
    • Critical Access Hospital of Participation
    • Critical Access Hospital regulations
    • Federal and State reporting requirements
    • Internal financial policies
  • Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
  • Ensure compliance with grant and governmental funding requirements
  • Coordinate annual independent financial audits.
  • Serve as primary contact for external auditors
  • Oversee preparation of required financial filings and reports
  • Ensure timely submission of regulatory financial reports.
  • Monitor key financial indicators including: Days Cash on Hand, Operating Margin, EBIDA, Current Ratio, Accounts Receivable Days, Labor Costs, and Productivity Metrics.
  • Provide financial modeling and scenario analysis
  • Recommend strategies for improving financial performance
  • Recruit, develop, coach and evaluate Finance Department staff.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement
  • Ensure staff receive ongoing education regarding healthcare finance regulations and best practices.
  • Partner with department leaders on budgeting and financial performance. 
  • Support grant development by providing financial information.
  • Assist with contract negotiations and financial evaluations.
  • Participate in organizational committees as assigned. 
  • Assist with strategic growth initiatives
  • Support physician recruitment financial analyses.
  • Evaluate new service line financial feasiblity.
  • Participate in community and professional organizations as appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required
  • Three to Five years in healthcare industry experience in a like managerial position required
  • Experience in both personal and mainframe computer systems required to include information systems applications for general ledger, budgeting, accounts payable, payroll, report writers, and trial balance functions.
