Job Description
Job Summary: This position consists of general library duties, including staffing circulation desk, shelving, data entry, and library maintenance.
Minimum requirements:
- Ability to display a positive attitude and work courteously, efficiently and effectively with staff, volunteers and the public.
- Ability to understand, communicate and adhere to library policy.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Accurate data entry skills; experience with computers, copiers, fax machines, Microsoft Office programs, the internet and mobile devices.
- Ability to learn and use Koha library automation system.
- Knowledge of alphabetical and Dewey Decimal filing systems.
- Knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling and basic arithmetic functions.
- Ability to follow written and oral directions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; with sufficient knowledge of library policies and procedures to use independent judgement to resolve circulation and patron issues.
- Ability to work regularly scheduled weekly shifts and may be asked with short notice to work shifts if coverage needs arise.
- Ability to maintain reliable transportation and punctuality for all scheduled work shifts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Opens and closes library branch according to established procedures, assuring the library is open during regularly scheduled hours.
- Performs general circulation desk duties including checking out materials to patrons, checking in returned materials, entering patron requests for materials, registering patrons, and processing patron holds using the Koha system.
- Provides service and information to patrons at circulation desk, over the telephone, by email, and over social media (where applicable).
- Serves patrons in a courteous manner.
- Processes incoming and outgoing hold requests for the ILG consortium according to the ILG Circulation Policy.
- Understand and follow all policies set forth by Benewah County Free Library District as well as ILG Circulation Policy.
- Monitors materials for damage and routes for repair.
- Processes incoming and outgoing Interlibrary Loan requests using Koha.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patron records and transactions.
- Assists patrons with public computers, the Internet, online catalog and downloadable content.
- Collects overdue fines, fees for copies and other payments, providing appropriate receipts and keeping accurate records.
- Shelves materials in proper alphabetical or numerical order.
- Keeps computers and printers clean, free of dust and printers stocked with paper .
- Keeps work areas/circulation desks, public spaces/rooms, and exterior porches/parking lot free of clutter and debris. Ensure garbage cans (interior and exterior) are emptied as needed. The activity room, conference room, and quiet room must be usable and free of stored items at all times.
- Keeps storage areas organized, clean and usable.
- Reads, straightens and dusts shelves as necessary and maintains orderly library appearance.
- Attends training, workshops and staff meetings as necessary, fulfilling position training requirements.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Other Responsibilities:
- Collection maintenance: Prepares new books for circulation. Evaluates condition, mends or recommends weeding or replacement as necessary.
- Assists with implementation of library programs and events, as needed.
- Monitors Koha reports as they relate to collections.
Qualifications:
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- US citizenship or documentation of eligibility for this position on US Immigration and Naturalization Form I-9 prior to beginning employment.
- Computer skills, especially Microsoft Office and other Windows applications, email and the Internet required.
- Accurate clerical skills. Knowledge of office procedures, terminology, equipment and devices.
- Library experience preferred.
Physical Demands:
- Position requires continuous standing, frequent sitting, walking, bending, reaching, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions of hands and wrists.
- Vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Extensive use of computer terminal.
- Ability to use keyboard and to view computer monitor for extended periods.
- Ability to move and check in library materials using an automated circulation system on a continuous basis.
- Must be able to lift and carry items approximately 40 lbs., bend and stoop, and push or pull carts weighing up to 100 lbs.
