Description

Course Overview -

Essentials of Welding 2 is a 5 week-long course designed for students who already possess a solid foundation in welding and are ready to further advance their skills and knowledge. This course focuses on advanced GMAW (MIG Welding) processes, including spray transfer, pulse welding, and dual-shield FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding). Students will gain hands-on experience with these processes in both flat and vertical positions, learn specialized techniques for vertical welding applications, and complete multiple groove weld test plates. A prior background in welding or successful completion of Essentials of Welding 1 is required before enrolling in this course.

Learning Outcomes -

• At the end of this course, participants will be equipped with:




• The ability to perform GMAW (MIG Welding) using several different weld processes and weld positions.


• The ability to perform FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding) using several different weld processes and weld positions.


• A firm understanding of how weld positions and processes affect the strength and integrity of welds.

Certification -

There are no certifications attached to this welding course. This course is for Professional Development and Personal Enrichment.

Target Audience -

• Employees that want more training and guidance with GMAW or FCAW welding.


• Employers that need to advance their employees' current weld skills.


• Ranchers or homeowners with previous experience welding that want to complete difficult projects.

Requirements -

Students will need to be prepared with the following in order to participate in class.

PPE Required

• Safety Glasses – We will not let you into the shop if you do not have safety glasses.


• Welding Gloves – needs to be all leather construction, driver or gauntlet style.


• Leather boots – Steel toed is preferred. Any kind of shoe with mesh will not be allowed.


• Welding Jacket – Needs to be at least a fire resistant (FR) jacket. Leather works really well; it's just expensive.


• Welding Helmet – a welding helmet with shade 10 as a minimum. I do not recommend buying cheap helmets from Amazon. They tend to break quickly. If you are on a budget, Harbor Freight is a decent alternative to the expensive name brand welding helmets.


• Welding Cap – Some sort of baseball hat or welding cap to cover your head from sparks.

Tools Required

• Chipping hammer


• Large Wire Brush


• Vice Grips – for handling hot materials.


• Welpers

There are many places you can purchase these items around town, such as Cal Ranch, Home Depot (a little more expensive), and Harbor Freight. If you go to welding supply stores like Norco or Airgas and tell them you are a student, they should give you a little discount. We do have a few extra hand tools you can borrow if you are unable to get them.
